from I midmorning cycled for 4 hours on the giant beast, as I planned for some hills and expected cobblestones. And, oh yeah, wind. Got in 55-65 km including climbs at 16%, and 15% and 11%. Maybe 2 km of cobbles. Love the mtn bike on cobbles!
Mostly cloudy, a few rain drops, some glorious sunny patches. Stopped in Schorisse for coffee and chatted with father and son cyclists in a mix of french and english.
After dinner, off to Egemont Castle for the free weekly concert. A good blues rock outfit, singing what I think are originals, all in English. Lots of people from 6 mo. To 60+ years. I think its a way of maintaining community, population, etc.
Friday Worked at office for a while and then took train to Antwerp to meet Pierre, Pres. Of International Federation for Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus. Pierre is a psychotherapist, artist (painter mainly), writer, parent and active leader of IF around the world.
We walked around the beautiful, pedestrian-friendly city. The RR station is a great mix of 1900 and 2000 architecture. Saw some wonderful massive paintings by Rubens in the Cathedral while an organ concert was underway. Fantastic contrasts of suffering and peace and salvation. A very nice fish lunch and then to Pierre's place for coffee, wine and extended discussion of my project work, families, politics, culture, etc. He lives in an apartment in a converted herring smoking establishment in the former fishmongers quarter of Antwerp – great building and a pleasant wiff, now and then, of the old commerce.
